ReCreateIt in Color: A Mural with a Mission

This past May (2025), we invited local fine artist and muralist Michelle Wilson to bring color and life to our Gigalab shipping container. With support from Allie Jenkins, Michelle completed the majority of the mural in just two days. This stunning mural captures the spirit and mission of ReCreateIt Labs.

The Story in the Mural

The artwork vividly illustrates the process and purpose behind what we do:

  • On the front left, the mural shows piles of colorful plastic waste, symbolizing the raw materials we collect.

  • Toward the front center and right, an arrow leads the eye to the Gigabot 3D printer, where this waste is transformed into new creations. Michelle represented this process with a vase holding a bouquet of vibrant flowers.

  • Moving to the right panel of the container, the mural depicts sleek, modern townhomes. These townhomes are affordable housing built by Austin Habitat for Humanity (AHFH) in the Mueller community. Designed in partnership with Michael Hsu Office of Architecture, these residences mark Habitat’s first multifamily row homes in Austin, an important milestone for an organization traditionally known for building single-family houses.

Connecting Art, Innovation, and Impact

The mural isn’t just about transformation. It reflects our greater mission. Profits from sales of ReCreateIt’s 3D-printed home goods help support Austin Habitat for Humanity’s work to build affordable housing across Central Texas. Our Sponsor, the National Science Foundation also takes a proud place on the mural.

About the Artist

Michelle Wilson, the creative force behind the mural, is a San Marcos–based watercolor artist, muralist, and custom creator. Through her freelance studio, Michi’s World of Chaos, she has produced murals across both San Marcos and Austin. Her work is celebrated for its bold colors, organic shapes, and deep connection to the beauty of nature.

An Authentic Austin Touch

Now every time we walk past the mural, we’re reminded of what makes Austin special—color, creativity, and community. Michelle captured that vibe perfectly while tying it back to our mission: turning plastic waste into something that can brighten homes and help build them too.
