Honoring President Carter Through Local Innovation

This fall, something powerful is happening at the Austin Habitat for Humanity ReStore. As volunteers gather for the 2025 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, they won’t just be building homes, they’ll be part of a circular process that reimagines waste as opportunity.

Honoring a Legacy of Service

This year’s build in Whisper Valley is especially meaningful. The 25 homes under construction are not only affordable, they are thoughtfully designed to be energy efficient from the start. Each one will be powered by a combination of geothermal energy and solar panels, helping families save on utility costs while also reducing their impact on the environment.

These homes reflect the same forward-thinking values that President Carter stood for throughout his life. He believed that housing should be both accessible and responsible, and this project brings that vision to life in a real and lasting way.

By honoring his legacy through this work, the Carter Work Project is doing more than building homes. It is building hope, creating opportunity, and continuing the mission that President Carter championed with such passion.

Turning Bottles into Something Bigger

This year, during the 2025 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Austin, we are doing something a little different. Every volunteer at the Whisper Valley build site will receive a reusable water bottle. And after a full day of building, they will have the chance to do one more good thing by donating that bottle back to us.

Why? Because we are turning those bottles into 3D printed home goods right here in Austin.

Through our ReCreateIt program, donated bottles will be collected, cleaned, shredded, and transformed into useful items like planters, vases, and lampshades. Each one will be designed and printed locally using plastic that might have otherwise ended up in the trash.

Come See the Results

Once the build in Whisper Valley is complete, the story continues at the Austin Habitat ReStore. Through our ReCreateIt program, the water bottles used by volunteers during the Carter Work Project will be transformed into unique home goods and these finished pieces will be on display and available for purchase.

You will be able to see firsthand how plastic from the build site has been cleaned, processed, and reimagined into something useful and beautiful. Come explore the collection and see how everyday materials can be turned into something lasting when innovation and community come together with purpose.
