Everyday Fixes with 3D Printing

With our convenient in-house Gigalab, we’re always thinking about what we can print next. Beyond the fun and cute figurines we shared in a previous blog post, some of us are more focused on how 3D printing can solve everyday problems in practical, meaningful ways.

With a background in CAD product design and a strong commitment to sustainability, our associate David has taken the lead in designing 3D-printed parts that replace broken components in everyday objects, as well as creating practical tools for household life.

While scouting at the ReStore, he noticed that several donated dressers were missing drawer knobs. He modeled and tested several knob designs that can be installed on those dressers, giving them both function and a refreshed look. The project is still in the testing phase, but David is excited about developing playful options such as flowers, stars, and other fun shapes, especially for children’s furniture.

At home, David applied the same mindset. When the latch on his flour container broke, instead of tossing the whole thing and buying a replacement, he designed and printed a custom latch. A small part made the old container fully functional again, keeping it out of the landfill.

He has also taken requests from friends and coworkers, designing and printing broom holders and coat hangers tailored to specific needs and spaces. These small, custom solutions make organizing easier while avoiding the need to purchase new plastic products.

One of David’s favorite designs so far is a magnetic knife holder he modeled and printed. The versatile design features a row of magnets that allows it to attach securely to a fridge or any metal surface, while knives and other metal tools are held on the opposite side. The final result turned out clean, strong, and secure, making it a simple but impactful addition to kitchens and workstations.

And he’s not stopping there. David is constantly modeling and testing new ideas. Current works in progress include a watering can, a paper towel holder, a reusable mesh bag, and custom silverware holders.

For us, this is what the Gigalab is all about: using creativity and technology not just to make things, but to make things last.
